Hello everyone,

Māori (/ˈmaʊri/, Māori: [ˈmaːɔɾi] ), also known as te reo, has been an official language of New Zealand since 1987. Every year, a Māori Language Week is held to promote Māori Language and celebrate Māori culture.


In 2021, Māori Language Week starts from 13 September to 19 September. This year's theme is "Kia Kaha te Reo Māori" ("‘Let’s make the Māori language strong").

Greeting Phrases:

Kia ora Informal greeting (Hi!), good health, thank you, used to agree

Tēnā koe Hello (when speaking to 1 person)

Tēnā kōrua Hello (when speaking to 2 people)

Tēnā koutou Hello (when speaking to 3 or more people)

Tēnā koutou katoa Hello/Greetings to everyone

Mōrena/Ata mārie Good morning

Pō mārie Good night

Kia pai te rā Have a good day

Farewell Phrases

Haere rā! Goodbye (said to person leaving)

E noho rā! Goodbye (said to person staying)

Hei konei rā! Goodbye (said by either)

Hei konā rā! Goodbye (when talking on the telephone)

Ka kite anō i a koe/kōrua/koutou! (See you (1, 2 or 3+) again.)

Mā te wā! See you later (at some point in the future)
